ELMONT - A Home Depot worker is behind bars after being accused of using a charity he ran to scam the home improvement chain out of thousands of dollars.

The Nassau District Attorney’s Office says Alfred Williams, a Home Depot employee for the past 22 years, used the company's Matching Gift Program to pocket more than $111,000. Authorities say Williams falsely reported to Home Depot that 40 of his fellow employees at the Elmont store had given donations to his organization. The company then matched those funds, which investigators say the employee used for personal use.

Prosecutors say the 57-year-old Queens man was also the self-appointed pastor of a religious organization he created called Faith Without Walls.

The Home Depot Foundation prohibits charities run by employees from participating in the program, but investigators say Williams got around that by not listing himself as a contact for the now-defunct religious organization.

Home Depot did not return News 12's calls for comment. Willams has been charged with several counts of grand larceny and identity theft.
