OCEANSIDE - A 6-year-old girl from Afghanistan received free life-saving surgery at South Nassau Communities Hospital today.

The girl, identified only as Marzieh, was shot in the face by the Taliban after witnessing the murder of her father and brother in their small mountainside village of Daikundi.

Marzieh was flown to New York by the Global Medical Relief Fund to get facial reconstructive surgery. Dr. Alizadeh, a plastic surgeon with Mission Restore, performed the surgery.

The United States Marines also provided toys for the young girl through the Toys for Tots program.

Doctors expect Marzieh will be going home in two or three weeks.
