LONG BEACH - Residents packed a public hearing in Long Beach Monday night to voice opposition to a proposed natural gas terminal off the South Shore.

The proposed Port Ambrose project would place a submerged transfer terminal 19 miles south of Long Beach.

Environmental activists say that liquefied natural gas -- which would be stored in the proposed terminal -- is very volatile and unstable.

The CEO of Liberty Natural Gas, though, says the project is good for Long Island and that the facility won't use natural gas obtained through the controversial process of fracking.

Some environmental activists say they would rather see wind turbines. Supporters of the plan say it would lower heating costs.

Critics, including state Assemblyman Todd Kaminsky, are asking Gov. Andrew Cuomo to veto the project.

The plan requires approval from the governors of both New York and New Jersey before the end of the year.
