BRENTWOOD - The killings of two Brentwood teenagers have put a spotlight on what activists are calling the growing problem of gang violence on Long Island.

The body of Nisa Mickens, 15, was found brutally beaten on Stahley Street Tuesday night. A day later, her friend Kayla Cuervas, 16, was found nearby.

News 12 also reported on the recent shootings in Wyandanch and Hempstead that left two teens dead and another injured. They all happened within the last two weeks and are believed by authorities to be gang-related.

"This is something that we are combating at all times, and there are peaks and valleys with these types of activities," says Nassau Police Chief Steven Skrynecki.

In Hempstead, anti-gang activists held a prayer service to call for an end to violence.

"We know where that lifestyle takes you. You're either going to prison, to a cemetery or to a hospital," says Sergio Argueta. "You're much too valuable to walk down that path."
