WOODBURY - One of three alleged shoplifters who led authorities on a chase that ended in tragedy last week is scheduled to face a judge today.
Police say Rashawn Smith was a passenger in a car carrying thousands of dollars of stolen merchandise from the Tanger Outlet Center in Riverhead. With authorities in pursuit, the car reached 100 miles per hour as the suspects tried to flee, according to investigators.
The car broadsided another vehicle in Bohemia, killing retired teacher Gail Sacher, of Holbrook.
Smith is charged with criminal possession of stolen property. Prosecutors say the driver, 24-year-old Cordell Tucker, will likely face more serious charges.Man pleads not guilty in fatal Sayville car chasePolice chase rules under scrutiny after fatal Bohemia crashLaw enforcement pursuit leads to fatal crash in Sayville
