SHIRLEY - About 8,000 federal workers on Long Island were put on furlough today after the government shut down at midnight.
Most of the furloughed workers are in support or clerical positions. Air traffic controllers, TSA agents, letter carriers, law enforcement, the military and some federal courts workers remained on the job. The Social Security Agency was open, but only in a limited capacity.
Some are concerned that buying a home with a federally backed FHA or VA loan could be seriously delayed. Mortgage expert Mike McHugh says he isn't seeing any problems just yet.
THE SHUTDOWN: How it will affect you
Financial experts say the government shutdown shouldn't have much of an effect on the Long Island economy if it only lasts a couple of days. However, if it lasts for a week, it could have a serious impact on the area.
