WOODBURY - AAA said today the average price for regular unleaded gasoline on Long Island is $4.14 a gallon, which is up more than a $1 from this time last year.
Rep. Steve Israel (D-Dix Hills) says it's time to tap into the nation's oil reserves and is urging President Barack Obama to release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
Israel is hoping the move will help bring down gas prices.
"I'm not suggesting for a minute that the release of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is a comprehensive long-term solution. It is a short-term source of relief that has always worked before and will work again," Israel says.
The record high for gas on Long Island was $4.34 a gallon back in 2008.
