80-year-old man fatally struck on Hempstead Turnpike

FRANKLIN SQUARE - Officials say an 80-year-old man is dead after being hit by a van on one of Long Island's most dangerous roads for pedestrians.

Police say the accident happened Saturday night near the intersection of Hempstead Turnpike and Ribbon Avenue in Franklin Square. They say the unidentified victim, who was 80 years old, was trying to cross when he was struck.

The victim was struck by the driver of an Optimum vehicle, who remained on the scene. The 41-year-old driver's identity has not been released.

Neighbors who know the busy road well say they are not surprised. Chief Ralph Espisito, with the Elmont Fire Department, says it's not the first deadly accident on the road, and it won't be the last. "I've seen too many accidents on the turnpike, and too many lives lost," he says.

Officials say no charges have been filed at this time.
