8-year-old killed in St. Pauls Road North apartment building fire

Officials say the fire started in an apartment on St. Pauls Road North around 6:30 a.m. (February 9, 2013)

HEMPSTEAD - Officials say an 8-year-old boy was found dead after a five-alarm fire tore through a Hempstead apartment building Saturday morning.

Officials say the fire started in an apartment on St. Pauls Road North before 6 a.m. Authorities say more than a dozen people were injured, including three firefighters.

Fire officials say one family used a rope to get out of the window, while a couple of people jumped from windows to escape the flames.

Authorities say 250 people have been displaced. The American Red Cross has set up a shelter nearby.

Nassau County Fire Marshal James Hickman says they are investigating whether the buildings' fire alarms were working, but say the fire does not seem to be suspicious.
