FARMINGDALE - Dozens of war heroes received a final farewell on Long Island today in an Armed Forces Day event.A line of hearses, escorted by Patriot Guard Riders, carried the remains of 62 veterans. Some of the veterans died close to 100 years ago. Many were decorated war heroes and all of them were cremated and left to languish in funeral homes across Long Island.The 62 war heroes received full military honors at the Long Island National Cemetery. Veterans honored included people who fought in both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam and the Spanish American War. The event was a combined effort of 14 Long Island funeral homes and the Missing in America Project, which has found and identified thousands of unclaimed remains nationwide.
