5 people rescued when paddle boat flips on LI Sound

WADING RIVER - Five people were rescued by a Good Samaritan last night when their paddle boat flipped over in the Long Island Sound a quarter-mile offshore from Wading River. Resident Dan Sackowitz says he leapt into action when he heard piercing screams coming from offshore at around 10:30 p.m. He got to his boat and within minutes located two men swimming in the Sound, both wearing life vests. They said their boat had flipped over and that there were others in the water. Sackowitz says he kept patrolling and followed the sound of crying to find two women and a 7-year-old boy clinging to an overturned paddle boat, all without life vests. News 12 Long Island located the boat at the home of its owner, Victor Saquicaray. Police say he was among those rescued, although he denies being on the boat. He says he's glad that everyone was OK.The paddle boat has a tag on it indicating its maximum capacity is five people.
