BRENTWOOD - A 4-year-old girl from Brentwood has been deported to Guatemala, despite being an American citizen.Emily Ruiz was flying home from a trip to South America with her grandfather when he was detained by U.S. Customs and deported for a previous immigration violation. The 4-year-old was sent back with him. Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington) is fighting to get the little girl back to the U.S."Deporting a 4-year-old girl who is an American citizen is just not serving the interest of anybody, no matter where you are on the immigration debate," he says.U.S. Customs officials say they offered Ruiz's parents, who are undocumented immigrants, a chance to pick up their daughter at the airport, but they declined.A family attorney now plans to travel to Guatemala to escort the 4-year-old home.
