MIDDLE ISLAND - Four people were killed in a two-vehicle crash in Middle Island last night.

Police say a pickup truck was traveling southbound on Yaphank-Middle Island Road when the driver, Gustave Geyer, lost control of the vehicle and struck a Nissan Altima going northbound.

According to police, Geyer, 25, of Ridge, was alone in his vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The male driver of the Altima was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Two passengers in the vehicle, a man and a woman, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say a female passenger in the Nissan was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital with life-threatening burns and head injuries.

According to police, an 11-month-old boy in the Nissan was trapped in the burning car but was rescued by Yaphank firefighters and Suffolk Emergency Services. He was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening.

The names of the occupants in the Nissan are being withheld pending positive identification. Police believe all five were related.

Police say Geyer is the one who caused the crash after leaving a family party. They add that while there were five people who called 911, only two witnessed the driving. One witness says the driver was speeding; the other says they saw Geyer driving "in a wild and crazy manner."

Police have not yet released the identities of the three victims in the Nissan Altima. They believe they were the father and grandparents of the rescued 11-month-old boy.

Anyone with information on this crash to call the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752.
