BALDWIN - Long Island is beginning to feel just a bit more like the Everglades: police have captured a third alligator in just a week. Two of the gators turned up within 24 hours in the same Pathmark parking lot in Baldwin. Police captured one of the reptiles Tuesday, and were summoned back yesterday afternoon to get another one. A Mastic homeowner found the first gator wandering around in his front yard last Friday. All three of the alligators have been 2- to 3-feet long. Wildlife rescuers say they don't pose much of a threat when they're that size, as long as they're not agitated. Experts say it's illegal to own alligators in New York state. They surmise that the reptiles were probably released because they grew too big to handle.
