24th annual Long Island Gay Pride Parade and Pride Fest held in Huntington

HUNTINGTON - Organizers say more than 15,000 people attended the 24th annual Long Island Gay Pride Parade and Pride Fest today.

The parade was held on Main Street in Huntington. Afterward, thousands gathered at Heckscher Park to celebrate their pride and community.

The event was organized by the Long Island GLBT Network. CEO David Kilmnick says he's blown away by the big turnout this year.

“This is just an incredible day for Long Island,” he told News 12. “Just to feel proud and celebrate in our hometown… It shows that we don't have to go to New York City to be ourselves.”

The day’s festivities were also attended by Edie Windsor. Her Supreme Court case ultimately led to key provisions of the Defense of Marriage Act to be deemed unconstitutional.

The GLBT Network will be opening a community center in Patchogue later this summer.
