Officials say the 23-year-old's kayak started taking on water.

SMITHTOWN - A Smithtown man was rescued by officials after his kayak started taking on water.

Police say a 23-year-old was kayaking in Smithtown Bay about 300 yards off shore just before 7 p.m. last night when he started taking on water.

According to officials, a bird watcher was there, spotted him and called 911.

Suffolk police and the Kings Park Fire Department rescued the man.

The man was taken to the hospital and treated for hypothermia.
