SHELTER ISLAND - A Shelter Island teenager’s message in a bottle has made landfall after traveling 1,000 miles over three years.

For the past eight years, Shelter Island High School teacher Jack Reardon has had students place notes in wine bottles to see how far the messages could travel.

Connor Corbett-Rice was in Reardon’s class in 2010. His bottle was found on Feb. 16 in the Bahamas.

Past bottles dropped by Reardon’s class have been found closer to Shelter Island, and none have traveled as far as this one.

Mr. Reardon plans to launch the next set of bottles in mid-May.
