2 notorious LI crime stories in national spotlight

WOODBURY - The search for a serial killer on Long Island and the case of a man convicted of raping and framing his ex-girlfriend will take the national spotlight on the Discovery Channel and NBC.

Tonight, NBC's "Dateline" will air a one-hour special on the case of Jerry Ramrattan, who was convicted of raping Seemona Sumasar and then accusing her of committing a series of armed robberies in Nassau County.

The show will include footage from News 12 Long Island and jailhouse interviews by reporter Shari Einhorn, who met with Sumasar during the nearly seven months she spent in jail before being cleared of all charges.

Next Monday, the Discovery Channel will premiere a new series called "Disappeared" focusing on the death of New Jersey escort Shannan Gilbert, who went missing in May of 2010.

Gilbert's remains were eventually found off Ocean Parkway in Oak Beach last December near 10 victims in the Gilgo Beach killings.

Former Suffolk Chief of Detectives Dominick Varrone is interviewed for the show.
