2 injured in Centereach Mack truck accident

CENTEREACH - Suffolk County police say two men were hospitalized today after an accident involving a Mack truck on Nicolls Road in Centereach.

Police say the Mack truck's brakes failed, which caused the truck to run through a red light. They say when the driver cut the wheel, the truck tilted over and landed on a minivan.

Rescue crews worked feverishly to save truck driver Kenneth Darwell and motorist Raphael Henriques, who was driving the minivan.

Witnesses say they couldn't believe that anyone could have been pulled from the wreckage alive.

Investigators say Henriques?s miraculous survival is likely because the window of the Mack truck landed right where he was sitting, causing him to miss the full force of crash.

The accident shut down Nicolls Road in both directions at Hawkins Road for hours.

Officials say both men are expected to be OK.
