EAST HAMPTON - Officials are investigating the cause of a small plane that crashed moments after takeoff from East Hampton Airport on Sunday.
The single-engine plane crashed around 5:30 p.m. with two people onboard.
Officials say the plane went down into a wooded area on Daniels Hole Road and then burst into flames.
East Hampton Police Lt. Christopher Hatch says the pilot experienced trouble shortly after takeoff and was trying to return to the airport but never made it.
Cops say residents played a critical role in assisting the victims, helping them out of the burning wreckage.
Last Sunday, a small plane crashed into a Shirley neighborhood after takeoff from Calabro Airport, two people were killed. Neighbors tried to rescue the trapped pilot and passengers.
