RIVERHEAD - Two people were injured when a Long Island Rail Road train struck two cars on the tracks in Riverhead Thursday afternoon, MTA officials say.

The incident occurred at the crossing near the intersection of Mill Road and West Main Street. The train was due to arrive at Ronkonkoma at 2:22 p.m.

According to an MTA spokesperson, 21 people were on the train at the time of the crash. They were not injured.

The spokesman says five people were involved in the crash inside the two cars. Two are being treated for injuries at Stony Brook University Medical Center. One person is in critical condition, while the other is in good condition, officials say.

An investigation by MTA police is still ongoing.
