BAYPORT - Two people are expected to survive after a small plane crashed in a Bayport neighborhood.
News 12 was at the scene Sunday shortly after the Piper 28 came down around 7 p.m., narrowly missing homes at the intersection of Third Avenue and Second Street.
The two people on board have been identified as 34-year-old Scott Clifford and 66-year-old Michael Rome, both of Orange County.
Clifford, the pilot, was taken to Stony Brook Hospital in serious condition with two broken legs and a head injury. Rome, the passenger, was expected to be OK.
Officials say it could have been a lot worse, as the plane burst into flames after crashing.
Engine failure appears to be the problem, but the FAA is now investigating.
