ISLANDIA - Eastbound lanes have been reopened on the Long Island Expressway following a problem with the road that caused multiple flat tires.

Two lanes had been closed during the evening rush between exits 57 and 58, about a mile west of the Veterans Highway overpass.

Police say approximately eight cars got flat tires after a steel expansion joint broke loose, and a jagged piece of it was sticking out of the road.

DOT crews responded to the scene. It's unclear what caused the condition.
