EAST MEADOW - Three survivors of a crash along the Southern State Parkway are fighting for their lives after the car they were riding in Sunday morning veered off the road and slammed into a patch of trees.

The accident happened at around 5:45 a.m. on the westbound side of the parkway, near exit 23 in North Merrick. State police say the driver, 30-year-old Kervens Boutin, of Hempstead, lost control of his 2008 Nissan Maxima and crashed into several trees.

Two of Boutin's passengers were pronounced dead at the scene. They have been identified as 20-year-old Bryan Rivas and 22-year-old Blossom Castro, both of Hempstead.

Boutin and two others inside the car were hospitalized. The injured passengers have been identified as 19-year-old Marlo Cabrera, of The Bronx, and 22-year-old Antonio Rivas, of Hempstead.

Boutin and Cabrera were taken to Nassau University Medical Center, where they remain in intensive care. Rivas is in critical condition at Winthrop University Medical Center.

Police say Boutin is being charged with reckless driving but additional charges are possible.

Boutin's family tells Newsday that he had both of his legs amputated today.

Neighbors say they didn't hear any brakes squealing, just an incredibly loud crash.

The winding stretch of highway has been dubbed "Blood Alley" because of the frequent crashes that happen in the area, according to neighbors. Some residents have contacted their local legislators to ask that a guardrail be installed along the road.

State police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them at 631-756-3300.
