2 dead, 1 critically injured in Mastic house fire

MASTIC - Police and the arson squad are investigating a house fire in Mastic that killed two men and critically injured a woman last night.

Police and firefighters responded to Broadway at 11:17 p.m. after a 911 call was received from a neighbor.

Officials say after gaining entry, firefighters removed two men and one woman from the home.

Douglas DeSouza, 64, the homeowner, was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead.

The other man was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead and was also pronounced dead. He has been identified as Robert Brownell, 64, of 43 Broadway. Neighbors say he was a close family friend of the homeowners.

DeSouza's wife, Barbara, 64, was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center where she is listed in critical condition.

Officials say there were no smoke detectors in the house. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information on this incident to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
