YAPHANK - The brand new Suffolk County Correctional Facility in Yaphank will begin housing inmates this weekend.

The first 105 inmates will be transferred to the new jail on Saturday. Dubbed the Taj Mahal of jails by County Executive Steve Bellone, the $185 million facility will eventually hold 440 inmates.

The state ordered Suffolk to build the new facility because of overcrowding at the Riverhead jail. Bellone told Newsday that the facility is "terrible news for the taxpayers."
