SANDS POINT - Officials say 16 people have been arrested and two are on the run in connection to a luxury car theft ring.

According to officials, the luxury cars are valued at more than $2 million.

Officials say the group is accused of stealing, tagging the cars and changing the vehicle identification numbers. The ring also allegedly gave out old registrations.

Prosecutors say the ring sometimes took orders for certain makes and models to be stolen.

The Queens District Attorney says the ring stole cars, including a Cadillac SUV, a $196,000 Bentley convertible and a Mercedes valued at more than $100,000. The ring is also accused of stealing Audis, BMWs, Range Rovers, Jeeps and a Porsche not just from repair shops and dealerships, but also driveways and even cars that owners left running while doing errands.

Prosecutors also say GPS devices were put in rental cars so they could track them and then steal them.

More than 300 cars were stolen from a number of locations in the tri-state including Westchester County, Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens. On Long Island, police say it happened in Locust Valley and Sands Point.
