ROCKVILLE CENTRE - More than a dozen neglected dogs found living in deplorable conditions in Rockville Centre could soon be up for adoption.

The 17 pets were rescued from a house on Clinton Avenue, where they were discovered living in their own waste. Police say four other dogs and a cat were found dead inside.

Police say they couldn't even open the door of the house because of all the debris.

The owner of the animals is currently undergoing a mental evaluation. A spokesman for the Town of Hempstead says if she agrees to give up the dogs, they could be put up for adoption in nine days.
