1 dead after LIRR train collides with SUV on tracks

CENTRAL ISLIP - Service on the Long Island Rail Road's Ronkonkoma line is back to normal following a deadly accident on the tracks early this morning.

MTA officials say a train hit an SUV that was stopped on the tracks between Central Islip and Brentwood at around 4:30 a.m., killing the vehicle's driver. Police say the train dragged the SUV a few hundred feet before both burst into flames. More than 60 Central Islip firefighters battled the fire. A total of 31 passengers were aboard the train at the time of the incident, but no one was injured. MTA officials say the third rail suffered extensive damage from the accident. As a result, service was suspended most of the day between Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma.

The male victim inside the SUV has not yet been identified. LIRRTraffic & Weather LIVE
