City officials renamed a Parkchester road in honor of an influential Bronx resident.
Newbold Avenue is now Jahi Williams-Simmons Avenue, named for the man who died one year ago Sunday.
His wife did not want to disclose the cause of death, but says he fought for those suffering from cancer and other ailments. She was diagnosed with breast cancer herself.
The renaming is part of a bill Mayor Bill de Blasio signed on July 9 that honors 63 New Yorkers throughout all five boroughs.
Assemblyman Luis Sepulveda was also on site to honor the man who he says worked tirelessly to help neighbors in need.
Officials say it typically takes between two and three years for a street to be renamed. For Jahi Williams-Simmons, it took only six months.
