An unscientific study conducted by a New York car dealership seems to suggest that New Jersey ranks No. 4 in states where drivers are more likely to speed up at a yellow light.
The study was conducted by Yonkers Honda. It also found that 50% of men around the country admitted to speeding up. About 40% of women said the same.
News 12’s Brian Donohue decided to see if New Jersey drivers really were likely to speed up at a yellow light. He sat along Route 1 & 9 to observe some drivers and their actions.
Donohue says that he saw many drivers speeding up when approaching a yellow light, so he decided to ask some of them if they knew the rules.
Most admitted to knowing that the light means to slow down or stop completely. Many drivers told Donohue that slowing down is exactly what they do when they see a yellow light.
“Especially if I see it coming up and I have time to make a safe stop,” said one driver.
The driver admitted that he used to speed up when seeing a yellow light when he was a younger driver. But he says that he slowed down as he got older.
“As you get older and with the grandkids, I pay more attention to my driving,” he said.
Traffic laws state that drivers are supposed to stop at a yellow light if they are able to do so safely.
As for the study, Maryland ranked No. 1, followed by North Carolina and Tennessee. Drivers from Kansas were most likely to slow down or stop for a yellow light.
