With the new year comes a new supervisor for the Town of Hempstead.
Don Clavin's name is not even on the sign outside of Town Hall yet, but the new Hempstead town supervisor was sworn into office by his sister, Valley Stream Village Justice Virginia Clavin-Higgins.
In November, the Republican defeated Democratic incumbent Town Supervisor Laura Gillen. It was a bitter battle that played out on the air and online. But Clavin says the transition of power was a smooth one.
Clavin claims he's already kept one of his campaign promises.
"Right off day one, I've saved residents $1 million. I've slashed the budget by the prior administration's supervisor budget by $1 million. We're going to take that money, and put it where it needs to be done. Into projects on the roads, repairs and back with the taxpayers," says Clavin.
Gillen positioned herself as a good government watchdog while in office. She called out alleged corruption in the GOP-controlled town. Residents say they expect Clavin to do the same.
Clavin says he'll be back at Town Hall bright and early Thursday, greeting residents and employees as they enter. He's hoping that personal touch, along with tangible results, will lead to continued success for the town.
