New charges for Sands Point cardiologist accused in murder-for-hire plot
A Sands Point cardiologist who is already accused in a murder-for-hire plot is now facing dozens of additional charges.
Dr. Anthony Moschetto, who practices in Great Neck, was arraigned Monday on 77 more charges including arson and weapons possession.
First arrested in April, Moschetto is accused of being the mastermind behind a plot to have fellow cardiologist Dr. Martin Handler killed after a business dispute. Moschetto allegedly set fire to Handler's office and then used illegal prescriptions for oxycodone, guns and cash as payment to a hit man. That hired killer turned out to be an undercover detective.
Acting District Attorney Madeline Singas says many of the new charges stem from the results of testing a cache of weapons found in a secret room behind a moving bookshelf in Moschetto's home.
Neither Moschetto or his attorney offered comments at his court appearance Monday. He is free on a $1.75 million bond secured by real estate and is due back in court next week.
If found guilty of the top charges, Moschetto faces up to 25 years in prison.
While the case is ongoing, Moschetto appears to still be seeing patients. His office did not confirm that information, but patients walking out his office told News 12 that they were stunned by the charges.
