The town of New Canaan is doing its part to keep some of its most vulnerable residents safe right now.
Staying Put, a nonprofit, has put its usual services and events on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic. Nicola Holzberger, who is part of the organization, says they are matching up seniors citizens with younger volunteers who can pick up their groceries or medications.
Trudi Yeager, 77, says while she's perfectly capable of going to the store right now, she's listening to the warnings. Courtney Dumais says she wanted to be able to help out and saw an email asking for volunteers to shop for a senior.
Staying Put matched the two up.
"She brings me the things that I need," Yeager says. "My family doesn't have to worry about me going to the stores... my daughter lives an hour away, my son... 2 1/2 hours, so it's a great help."
Staying Put is part of a larger effort launched by the town to connect as many seniors as possible with a volunteer. There are more than 1,500 residents in New Canaan who are 75 years old and older.
Yeager is asking her fellow seniors to do the same, and she says she feels like she has a new friend.
For more information, you can contact Nicola Holzberger with Staying Put at 203-594-3093 or Bethany Zaro with the Town of New Canaan at 203-594-3093.
