Neighbors want blighted home bulldozed in Dix Hills
Neighbors in a Dix Hills community are demanding answers as to why an abandoned home that burned down over the weekend has been left to rot.
Porzia DiGiogio is one of many residents on Carriage Court who say they want the blighted and burned house knocked down once and for all.
"Put a fence around the property, bulldoze the house. It's a very unsafe situation right now," said DiGiogio.
As News 12 has reported, the Town of Huntington says the house is owned by Nicholas D'Onofrio, a pastor at the Upper Room Ministries Tabernacle in Dix Hills, and his wife Linda. The house has been abandoned for years.
No one inside the D'Onofrios' Deer Park home would answer the door for News 12.
A town spokesperson says Linda D'Onofrio was personally given a notice Monday to have the blighted house boarded up and secured immediately. As of Tuesday, nothing had been done.
Town officials say the fire has been deemed suspicious. Despite the fire, a spokesperson for the Town of Huntington says a hearing was set to continue Tuesday, "under the Town's blight law into whether mold in the house can be remediated or if it should be demolished."
Late Monday, however, town officials say the hearing was postponed because the owner's attorney was going to be out of state.
Town officials say they have not set a new date yet for the hearing.
The D'Onofrios' attorney told News 12 that his clients have no comment.
