Neighbors stumped by PSEG tree removal on Searingtown Road in Albertson
Residents in Alberston are looking for answers after they say 13 historic trees were suddenly cut down by PSEG crews.
The trees were chopped along Searingtown Road, leaving large stumps that some neighbors are calling unsightly. Residents say they weren't notified in advance or given an explanation as to why the trees needed to be taken down.
News 12 Long Island contacted PSEG, and a spokesperson says that the utility's crews did chop down the trees. However, they said it was not part of PSEG's line clearance or tree-removal program. The spokesperson says the trees were cut down at the request of either the Town of North Hempstead, or of the county.
Environmental activist Richard Brummel says he's been fighting for years to save trees on Long Island. "Trees are really an essential part of the ecology to mitigate global warming, to fight the pollution we put in, from our cars, from our homes, from our activities," he says. "To cut them down, we're cutting our own throats."
Neighbors say they're furious that the trees are gone, particularly because there's no clear answer as to who authorized it.
News 12 contacted both North Hempstead and Nassau County to get answers about the trees, but has not yet heard back.
