The Department of Transportation launched a safety improvement project last year at a dangerous Van Nest intersection, but some who live in the neighborhood say it’s actually doing more harm than good.
The changes at East Tremont and Van Nest avenues were made to improve pedestrian safety. Neighbors, however, say the changes have made it more dangerous for cars that are turning.
A pedestrian island was installed, and at the tip of it appears to be a small post to prevent cars from hitting pedestrians.
The DOT began the improvements over the summer and they were completed in the fall. Since then, neighbors say they’ve seen multiple cars overturn. Drivers say there isn’t enough space for clearance.
Duran Auto owner Andre Duran says he saw three cars overturn in the last two weeks.
“It’s more of a danger than an actual help,” says Duran.
Duran feels the DOT needs to redesign the project, with the possibility of adding a speed bump.
