The attorney representing Kyle Navin in the slayings of both his parents sought to prevent the jury in his upcoming trial from hearing certain statements the defendant made to police.
The Easton couple Jeffrey and Jeanette Navin disappeared in early August 2015. Police found their bodies three months later, dumped in the woods behind an empty home in Weston.
Both had been shot to death.
Kyle Navin's arrest warrant lists text messages between him and his girlfriend discussing problems about his parents and a plan to eliminate them and get their money.
In addition to preventing the jury from hearing some of the things Navin told police, defense attorney Gene Riccio is challenging the police seizure of his client's cellphone and phone records and the search of his home.
"We've raised a number of legal issues," Riccio said. "The various searches in this case, as well as my client's questioning by the police departments."
Easton's chief of police testified Thursday that the department had requested Navin's cellphone records before the bodies of his parents were found. Police were conducting a missing persons investigation, he said. And Jeffrey Navin's cellphone had last pinged near Kyle Navin's home.
Police say the younger Navin was a drug addict who grew angry at his parents' decision to cut him off.
Jennifer Valiante, the girlfriend, allegedly helped him clean up and hide the crime. She pleaded guilty to hindering the prosecution in exchange for eight years in prison.
Navin turned down a plea deal that would have sent him to prison for up to 60 years.
The trial begins April 17.
