Nassau County announced it will install new signs with flashing lights in 56 school zones eligible for speed cameras.
The county says the project will cost $1 million and Nassau's Community Revitalization Program will foot the bill.
Legislator Judy Jacobs (D-Plainview) and the rest of the minority caucus say they voted to start the speed camera program in June with the understanding that prominent signage with blinking lights would be placed at each school where cameras operate. Jacobs says the new flashing lights will help drivers feel they're getting a fair shot.
As News 12 reported, many residents in Nassau complained after the lack of signage after being hit with an $80 fine.
Residents who spoke with News 12 said the added signage will help. Others maintain that the cameras are only a cash grab for the county.
The county says each of the 56 sites is expected to have signs up by early next year.
