The Nassau County Legislature's presiding officer is asking District Attorney Madeline Singas to recuse herself from the investigation into a legislator's assault charges.

Legislator Carrie Solages, an Elmont Democrat, is accused of domestic violence.

Normal Gonsalves, a Republican and the presiding officer, wants a special prosecutor to handle the case.

Gonsalves says court records accuse Solages of telling his girlfriend that he "owns the police department and the courts." The girlfriend remarked in court that "he believes if I call the police on him, nothing will happen to him." Another concern for Gonsalves is that the Legislature has oversight over the DA's budget, and Solages says he will remain in office. 

"The accusations raised against me are false," Solages wrote on Facebook Thursday. "I am innocent and will have my day in court. I will continue to serve my constituency."

Singas appears to have dismissed Gonsalves' request.

"This office has successfully prosecuted other public officials without conflict, and there is none presented here," a Singas spokesman says.

Solages' defense attorney did not immediately respond to a News 12 request for comment.

The legislator is expected to attend a meeting of the county's Legislative Rules Committee, of which he is a member, on Monday.
