Nassau Legislator Dave Denenberg attends Legislature meeting amid fraud allegations
Nassau lawmakers met Monday for the first time since Legislator David Denenberg withdrew from the state Senate race after his former law firm filed a lawsuit against him.
As News 12 has reported, a Garden City Law firm filed a complaint last month that Denenberg committed fraud when he billed one of his legal clients more than $2 million over eight years for work that was never done. The suit charges Denenberg is guilty of "heinous criminal misconduct" calling him a "rouge lawyer" and a "devious criminal."
Denenberg released a statement last month saying in part that the charges were extremely serious and that the timing politically should raise many questions. He said he plans to fight the allegations against him.
Even though Denenberg is not campaigning for a state Senate seat, his name will still remain on the ballot come November. His opponent is Republican Nassau Legislator Michael Venditto.
No one on the Republican or Democratic side of the legislature would comment about the allegations against Denenberg at Monday's meeting. Neither did his attorney Bruce Barkett.
There has been no mention of Denenberg stepping down as a Nassau County legislator. He would be up for re-election in November 2015.
