The Nassau County Republican Committee is expected to officially nominate former Mineola mayor and three-term state Sen. Jack Martins as its candidate for Nassau County executive.
Martins say he will campaign as a problem solver with a proven track record.
"We did it in Mineola, whether it's fixing finances, reassessing properties, getting people help, restoring public trust. That's what this is about," says Martins.
Political analyst Jerry Kremer says Republican candidates will face an angry electorate in November. Progressives are out in full force in the aftermath of President Donald Trump's election, and some Republicans continue to be frustrated with gridlock in Washington and conditions in Nassau.
County Executive Ed Mangano, a fellow Republican, is facing federal corruption charges - but is still mulling a run for a third term.
"I think the national situation will work its way down locally. Combined with the local problems, it's a very tough year for the Republican Party," says Kremer.
Martins says his party's values remain in line with the average Nassau resident, and he intends to prove it.
"Republicans are people who stand for fiscal management, public safety and community values," says Martins. "This isn't about creating a boogeyman, it's about finding solutions."
The Nassau Democratic Committee is backing Laura Curran as its candidate for county executive. She is facing a three-way primary.
On Thursday afternoon, longtime Nassau Legislator Norma Gonsalves announced she will not run for re-election. She has served as the Legislature's presiding officer since 2012. Assemblyman Tom McKevitt was nominated to take her place.
