Nassau exec says he's open to talks on 6th Precinct
Nassau County Executive Ed Managno says that he is open to talks about the possibility of reopening the police department's 6th Precinct.
As News 12 has reported, the 6th Precinct in Manhasset was shuttered along with a handful of others in 2012 as part of a consolidation and cost-saving measure.
On Monday, Democrats in the Nassau Legislature and PBA President James Carver once again called on Mangano to reverse course.
Mangano is now apparently reconsidering the closure if the PBA is willing to negotiate. A similar plan worked a couple of years ago when the county reopened the 5th Precinct in Elmont.
"When we worked with the PBA on the 5th, they relaxed some of the contractual rules that maintained savings for the taxpayer and we were able to come to an agreement," Mangano says.
Carver says the union is willing to talk. In the meantime, the 6th Precinct's former coverage area will continue to fall under the 3rd Precinct's jurisdiction. North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth says the consolidation has affected crime in the area.
Meanwhile, Kensington village resident and trustee Alina Hendler says residents of the Great Neck peninsula deserve to have a precinct a little closer to home.
Carver says he may speak with Mangano as soon as this weekend, or will do so by the middle of next week at the latest.
