Nassau declines to release school speed zone camera data
Nassau County says it is withholding certain information on its controversial school speed zone camera program.
The county says it will no longer disclose which cameras are active, or release information about when new cameras are going online.
County officials are also not disclosing how much money is made from tickets issued by the 77 speed zone cameras. Newsday filed a Freedom of Information Law request with the county for information on ticket revenue and the number of tickets issued. The county denied the request, saying Nassau's Traffic and Parking Violations Agency was part of the state's district court system. The county said that the information is part of court documents and is not public information.
However, state officials say that's not true, and that details on the speed cameras indeed constitute public information. A spokesperson for the state court system said, "The Nassau Traffic and Parking Violations Agency is a Nassau County agency and is not part of the New York state court system." Therefore, the spokesperson said, the county's speed camera information does not fall under private court documents.
The state's Committee on Open Government agreed, stating, "Records maintained by the county indicating how many tickets were issued or the amount of revenue generated from a particular program are required to be made available."
A spokesman for the county told News 12 that the county will eventually release the information after it is reviewed.
