Nassau County to unveil results of HUB traffic study
The Nassau County Legislature will unveil the results of a million-dollar study that scrutinized how to ease traffic congestion in the Nassau HUB at a meeting Wednesday night.
Environmental and civic activists are promoting a plan that includes a light rail, bus service and automated trains to ease congestion among the 51,000 vehicles that travel in and around the 10 square-mile area during the morning commute. The plan would also convert a seldom-used Long Island Rail Road freight line into a transportation route in the HUB.
The transportation line would run through the backyards of many Garden City residents, who say they fear the proposed solution would disrupt their daily lives. However, HUB supporters say the development is about growing the economy and generating more tax revenue to ease the burden on county residents.
The Nassau HUB includes EAB Plaza, Nassau Coliseum and Eisenhower Park on the Southeast, and the Roosevelt Field and Source Malls to the North. It encompasses Nassau Community College, Hofstra University and Roosevelt Field, and travels as far west as the Nassau County Government offices in Mineola. Hempstead Village and Mineola.
