Nassau Executive Laura Curran and health officials gave an update on the county's response to the coronavirus outbreak.
Curran says there were 20 new cases overnight Saturday, bringing the total number of positive COVID-19 cases up to at least 70 in Nassau County. She expects the number to increase as more tests are processed. She says that 10 of the cases are hospitalized, and three of them are in critical condition.
There are also at least 244 mandatory quarantines in place. Curran urges those in mandatory quarantine to stay in quarantine, as containment is key to prevent the virus from spreading. She adds that community spread is the biggest danger.
On Friday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that New York will be ramping up testing. Saturday, he announced the first death from coronavirus in the state, an 82-year-old woman with underlying respiratory illness. He added that Jones Beach is being eyed as a possible drive-thru testing site.
The county hotline, 516-227-9570, is up and running with medical reserve professionals. And the New York State hotline is staffed 24/7 at 888-364-3065.
