County Executive Laura Curran says she's concerned about the uptick in COVID-19 hospitalizations in Nassau.
The current number of hospitalizations is 66 - far from the 2,500 during the pandemic's peak - but the number is going in the wrong direction.
"While we have seen a slight uptick in our hospitalizations, it's not near where it was. However, this uptick does cause me concern," says Curran.
With the spike in cases, Gov. Andrew Cuomo imposed shutdown rules in "orange" and "yellow" areas, based on their figures. But numbers in Lawrence, Inwood and Cedarhurst have since dropped, meaning children were allowed to return to in-person instructions and businesses like hair salons and gyms reopened.
"Lawrence cases continue a steady drop in positivity, dropping 25% in the last week and about 75% in the last weeks," Curran said.
Nassau Health Commissioner Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein says his team continues to keep a close eye on numbers countywide.
"Great Neck we were watching closely and the rates have not gone up in the last two weeks, they've stayed steady," he says. "They also haven't come down. There are also a few other places where the numbers go up and down a little bit but nothing that has jumped out where we immediately need to set up a testing site."
