While many students are wrapping up their summer vacations, one high school student is putting the finishing touches on a project honoring those who lost their lives on Sept. 11.
Chaminade High School junior Steven Giammona selected the project as part of his Eagle Scout project.
Giammona tells News 12 Long Island that he wanted to dedicate his time enhancing the Stewart Manor 9/11 Memorial near the corner of Covert and Chester avenues to remind future generations of the ultimate sacrifice that many courageous people made on that tragic day, including his uncle, Vincent Giammona, an FDNY captain and first responder.
The 16-year-old was born a month after his uncle died.
The monument displays a piece of steel from the World Trade Center that was donated to the Stewart Manor Fire Department. The steel is mounted on a base of concrete and brick with a granite top, and is surrounded by memorial pavers.
The completed monument is set to be unveiled at 6:30 p.m. on the corner of Covert and Chester avenues on Sept. 11.
To purchase a memorial paver ($100) or to donate funds for the Stewart Manor memorial, email: Stewartmanormemorial@gmail.com
