Fifty breeder dogs rescued by North Shore Animal League America received a day of grooming in Westbury on Monday.

Students in the animal care skills class at the Nassau Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) Barry Tech Center combed, cut, brushed and bathed the newly free pups.

"It was the first time they have been held and loved and cared for," said Jayne Vitale, of North Shore Animal League America.

Melissa Salvati, of Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, says the students not only got a chance to use their grooming skills, but also got the chance to see what commercial breeding dogs look like and the conditions they come in.

"Just helping them and seeing how we can change their life is amazing," says Allegra Beausoleal, of Garden City.

Once the dogs are cleaned up and healthy, they will be ready to move into their forever homes.

North Shore Animal League America says the rescued dogs should be available for adoption by the coming weekend.
