New Jersey’s top gubernatorial candidates were back on the campaign trail Thursday, with one picking up another endorsement and the other doubling down on ways to protect residents.
Democratic candidate Phil Murphy held two rallies with Gold Star father Khizr Khan. Khan’s son was an Army captain who was killed in Iraq.
Khan has been a loud critic of President Donald Trump even from before he was elected. Khan campaigned with Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election season.
Khan says that voting for Murphy is a vote for inclusion and a vote against bigotry and hate. Murphy called Khan a hero and inspiring.
“In many, many ways, Mr. Khan exemplifies the ideals and values we built our campaign on; fairness and inclusion, hard work and ultimately sacrifice,” Murphy said.
Murphy also pointed out that New Jersey has the second-largest Muslim population in the country.
Meantime, Republican gubernatorial candidate Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno focused on immigration issues in New Jersey. She spoke about 36 criminals who were recently re-arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials in Middlesex County.
Guadagno says Murphy promised to make New Jersey a sanctuary state, which she believes is very dangerous. She listed some of the offenses those re-arrested were already convicted of before being released.
“Child abuse, possession of heroin, distribution of heroin and aggravated assault.  These individuals were convicted of those crimes and then released back out into the Middlesex County community,” said Guadagno, the former Monmouth County sheriff.
Guadagno and her running mate Carlos Rendon were joined by sheriffs from Somerset and Ocean counties, as well as the Seaside Heights police chief and mayors from around the state.
New Jersey’s gubernatorial election is Nov. 7,
